As Mrs Henderson Presents shimmies onto the London stage, Holly Williams looks at the colourful history of baring all while treading the boards. The Windmill soon became the most popular theatre in town, its static, classical tableaux of de-robed lovelies proving more of a draw than any song-and-dance routine. Bare bottoms, it turned out, meant bums on seats — and the theatre was the only one not to close during World War Two.
When is over, the movie I will remember that gave me the most pure and unfiltered joy is Mrs. Henderson Presents. What they saw was a never-ending musical nudie revue dedicated to the belief that entertainment was the key to survival, and the show must go on.
Stephen Frears' "Mrs. Henderson Presents" tells the story of the Windmill Theatre, a London establishment that made a name for itself in the '30s with its seminude revues: To avoid running afoul of the censors, the theater's topless showgirls had to remain completely still onstage, like living works of art.
